Central Carolina Wildlife Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
preservation and conservation of our wildlife and natural ecosystems.

We achieve this through comprehensive education and outreach programs. When
people encounter wild animals, either in nature or in their own rural/urban setting,
their fear combined with the lack of knowledge often creates a potentially
hazardous situation, especially for the animals. This is where we come in. We are
licensed by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission to offer services to help
neutralize encounters with wildlife. We then seize the newly created *Teachable
Moment* to educate those involved in the animal encounter.

Community Services

CCWR, Inc. and our volunteers provide many services to our community, including:
  • Animal care at our center
  • Specialized at-home animal care
  • Educational public speaking engagements from experts in our Wildlife
Education Team to our local schools and community groups. They cover
important information about local wildlife, ways to safely interact with wildlife,
concerns that threaten wildlife and how we can protect wildlife, and when to
    intervene with wildlife
  • On-call Hot line assistance and advice
  • Assist private citizens and organizations with wildlife emergencies.
  • Provide medical care to many animals annually.
  • Educate the public to respect wildlife and understand the factors that affect
    their behavior and survival.
  • Work with state and federal agencies and other private organizations to
reduce or eliminate man made hazards to wildlife. We receive no funding from
    these organizations.

CCWR volunteers and staff are required to meet Minimum Standards for Wildlife
Rehabilitation guidelines established by the International Wildlife Rehabilitation
Council (IWRC) and the National Wildlife Rehabilitation Association (NWRA). These
guidelines are accepted as standards of care by our permitting agencies of the
North Carolina Wildlife Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Continuing Education classes are also required to keep volunteers and staff current
with the ever-changing field of Wildlife Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation and Release

At CCWR, Inc., volunteers, staff, and consulting veterinarians work together to
provide care for a wide variety of patients with the ultimate goal of releasing them
back into the wild. Often our patients arrive at the shelter as a direct result of human
activities and we find it especially rewarding to help these animals.

To achieve the goal of rehabilitation and release we must restore wild animals to
their natural state. This means that after rehabilitation an animal must be healthy
and strong enough to deal with its natural environment and predators. It must be
able to feed, find shelter, breed and escape dangers of all kinds. In particular it
must be able to deal with the special challenges of living in an urban area- the
animal must be properly fearful of domestic pets, cars, and people.

While we attempt to return all animals to their native habitat, some animals are so
badly injured they could not survive in the wild.  When possible these animals
become educational ambassadors in programs that teach people about the beauty
of nature and the helpful benefits these so-called “nuisance” animals provide.  We
work closely with veterinarians, and other experts, to insure that we provide the
best housing, dietary needs, and emergency and preventative health care
possible.  Finally, we operate our organization in compliance with all federal, state,
and local wildlife regulations, and possess the required permits and licenses to do
so.

We thank you for finding us, and hope that if you need help you will feel free to
